News: Romano Fenati and Boscoscuro split after just six races

Moto2 rider Romano Fenati was signed on to ride for the Speed Up/Boscoscuro outfit for the 2022 Moto2 season, but after six disappointing results at the start of the season it has been announced that he will not compete with the team moving forward.

Fenati originally made the step up to Moto2 in 2018, but was demoted after an incident involving him grabbing the break lever of another rider mid-race. He returned to the Moto3 field between 2019 and 2021 where he achieved mixed results.

Having stepped up to the Moto2 class again this season, Fenati scored just seven points from his opening six races, with a best result of eleventh coming at Portimao after the original race was red-flagged and eleven riders eliminated from the restart.

While Boscoscuro have yet to announce who will replace Fenati, the expectation is that the seat will go to Alonso Lopez, who has previously ridden for the manufacturer in the European Moto2 championship in 2021. Lopez also rode three stand-in races for the team in 2021, and has three years of experience in the Moto3 class between 2018 and 2020.

This isn’t the first time the Speed Up team has let a rider go before their full term in the class, as they previously sacked Yari Montella in 2021 before he could ride a full season in the Moto2 class.

There is no word yet on Fenati’s plans moving forwards.
